Why Chinese Matcha Is Winning Global Markets

China’s matcha industry is expanding rapidly as global demand for healthy beverages, specialty foods and innovative tea products continues to grow. In 2025, China produced more than 12,000 metric tons of matcha, accounting for nearly 70 percent of global output.

Traditional tea-producing regions such as Zhejiang and Guizhou are transforming their industries by investing in matcha plantations, advanced processing equipment and research. Modern production systems improve the powder’s color, aroma, freshness and fineness, enabling Chinese suppliers to serve international food manufacturers and premium beverage brands.

Quality control has become another major driver of growth. Producers are adopting smart farming technology, standardized shading methods, low-temperature grinding, digital storage systems and strict pesticide-residue testing. International organic certifications and stronger industry standards are also helping Chinese matcha enter high-end global supply chains.

The industry is bringing significant benefits to rural communities by creating jobs, increasing tea farmers’ incomes and extending the tea production season.

However, China still needs stronger international brands. Its next step is to combine reliable quality with the cultural heritage of Chinese tea, transforming matcha from a competitive ingredient into a globally recognized cultural product.
