Basic Matcha Latte (Hot)

The absolute cornerstone of matcha preparation, creating a frothy, lump-free base is key to an excellent latte.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp (about 2 g) ceremonial grade matcha powder
  • 2 oz hot water (not boiling, roughly 175°F to 180°F)
  • 1 cup milk of your choice (oat, almond, or whole)
  • 1/2 tsp maple syrup, honey, or agave (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Sift: Sift the matcha powder through a fine-mesh strainer into a small bowl to remove any lumps.
  2. Whisk: Add the hot water to the matcha powder. Using a traditional bamboo matcha whisk or a handheld frother, whisk briskly in a zig-zag (or “W” or “Z”) motion for about 15-30 seconds until a frothy layer forms.
  3. Mix: Warm and lightly froth your milk on the stove or in a frother. Stir the sweetener into your matcha base, then pour the frothed milk over the top and enjoy.
